Domain Pay-Per-Click

I just got back to work this week, after two weeks of vacations. I needed some days to clean my inbox! Now that everything is in order I can post on WhGeek.Com again.

Do you own some domain names that you are not using? Or do you operate a domain name registration service and are still looking for new revenue alternatives? Domain Pay-Per-Click services like Domain Sponsor are one of the Internet’s fastest-growing businesses according to Netcraft.

I suggest you read Netcarft’s article.

Where to advertise online?

If you are looking to advertise your web hosting business, HostDirs is a good starting point, especially the list of web hosting directories where you should get listed! After a little bit of search you might be able to find a good advertising deal.

Sync your files between PCs

Ok, it’s not 100% related to web hosting, but we all have problems with replicating our files on the computer at work or our laptop with the files on the computer at home. Someone sent me a link to BeInSync. It looks interesting. I did not try it yet, but I thought you web hosting geeks would like to give it a try. Post your comments here and tell us if you try the software!

The Web Hosting Show

Even if it was featured in Ping! Zine, and I am a subscriber, I did not know about the Web Hosting Show before Mitch emailed me last friday. I read Ping! Zine but sometimes I miss some issues when others at the office steal my magazines! It’s probably normal when you have twenty five Web Hosting Geeks fighting for one copy of Ping! Zine.

Mitch told me : “I like what you folks have started here! I’ve been saying for months now that the Web hosting world needs a few more bloggers.” Thank you Mitch and you are right! The Web Hosting World needs more bloggers. Listen to Mitch and get in touch with us at contact [at] webdepart.com if you would like to be a Web Hosting Geek blogger!

Do not forget to visit Mitch’s Web Hosting Show, he was on vacations last week but the show should be back this week.

Few posts for the next 2 weeks

I launched the Web Hosting Geek about 3 weeks ago and so far I am happy with the results in term of visitors. Few web hosting geeks post their comments for the moment but I am confident that you’ll participate once we’ll have more posts each day and when you will see the others commenting the posts.

I need to let you know that I’ll be out of the office for two weeks and I doubt that my girlfriend will allow me to open my laptop during my vacations! Yes I am a lucky Web Hosting Geek, I know that vacations normally do not exist when you work in the Web Hosting business.

There will be few posts until I get back. I programmed some, but it will not be as usual. Please keep WHGeek.Com in your bookmarks, there is a lot more to come and I am sure the web site will become a really good resource for the web hosting community. I just received an interesting email from Mitch Keeler of the Web Hosting Show that shows I am not the only one thinking the web hosting world needs a few more bloggers. I’ll talk about it in my next post.

Should the registrars take action against spammers?

I never thought a domain registrar would suspend a domain for spamming, I thought the industry left that responsability to hosting providers. I learned today that GoDaddy already takes actions against spammers.

Thank you for contacting the GoDaddy.com Spam and Abuse Department. We have redirected the following domain names for violations of our Spam and Abuse policies.

That’s what was posted on Web Hosting Talk today. I hate spam and I like the idea, but at the same time I am scared. How does GoDaddy decides if a domains should be suspended? How do they investigate the case? Do they send prior notifications before taking actions?

This case happened after a SpamHaus listing. SpamHaus is normally a trustable blacklist. I am scared that registrars like GoDaddy would trust other black lists that are less accurate and would cause domains to be suspended wrongfully. Read the thread on WHT for other opinions.

Domains search tools

Domainsbot just released a new domain search tool and offers XML for registrars that would like to integrate the domains suggestion tool into their web sites. Domain name suggestions are interesting but does it really generate sales?

The overselling issue

Great article on WHReviews.com and great thread on WHT about overselling.

If your server has a 80GB hard disk, will you sell only 80 x 1GB accounts? Or will you sell more assuming that not everyone will use its full 1GB space?

My opinion is that overselling is everywhere in our day to day life. The electricity company does not assume you will use all of the electricity power they give you, the phone or cellphone company does not assume you will use your phone 24 hours per day and the web hosting company does not assume you will use all of your available bandwidth and disk space.

Overselling is not bad … but excessive overselling is a big problem that gives a bad reputation to the overselling business model in general. Read WHReviews’s article to learn more !

Blog Hosting with B2Evolution

Some visitors asked us what software we were using to publish the Web Hosting Geek. We are powered by b2Evolution. B2 is a powerfull and easy to use multilingual and multiuser blog engine. I would have to agree with what B2’s home page says : “b2evolution is probably the most comprehensive blog engine you can find!”. A usefull software for web hosting providers that want to offer blog hosting.

Alternative Web Hosting Forum

Beside Web Hosting Talk, there are other interesting, less crowded, Web Hosting forums. DataCenterTalk is one of them. Discussions on DCT focus on Datacenters and Telecom. You will also find a big advertisement section where you can find or request routers, switches, transit or other datacenter, web hosting and telecom related stuff.

Web Hosting Agreements

You need an agreement for your hosting services but do not want to spend money for a lawyer? Take a look at Jurifax’s web hosting contract templates. Jurifax has over 600 legal forms and agreements for Business People, it’s not only for the Web Hosting Geek!
